How your score is worked out
Typing speed is measured in words per minute (wpm), where a word is any 5 characters, spaces and punctuation included. This test counts only the characters you typed correctly, so a mistake costs you speed. Accuracy is the share of your key presses that were right first time, and errors counts every wrong key, even ones you went back and fixed.
What's a good typing speed?
As a rough guide, 30 to 40 wpm is a comfortable everyday speed, 50 to 70 wpm is fast, and above 80 wpm is very fast. For school and university work, aim first for accuracy above 95%; speed follows with practice.
How to type faster
- Keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF and JKL;) and use the same finger for the same keys every time.
- Look at the screen, not the keyboard. It feels slower for a week, then much faster.
- Slow down to stop mistakes. Fixing an error costs more time than typing carefully.
- Practise a little every day: ten minutes daily beats an hour once a week.
- Practise on real text with the words you need, not only random common words.
Typing speed matters in computer-based exams
IELTS on computer, TOEFL, PTE and many professional and school exams are now typed. Slow or error-prone typing takes time away from thinking about the answer. Read more in typing speed in computer-based exams, or see how Type to Study helps you practise typing on your own subject.
