PLAB Study App: Revise PLAB 1 from Your Own Notes
PLAB is the assessment that many international medical graduates take to register with the General Medical Council in the UK. PLAB 1 is a written exam on how you would manage clinical situations in the UK. Type to Study can turn your notes and the guidance you read into lessons, flashcards and quizzes. It does not replace the GMC's materials or a PLAB question bank.
What PLAB covers
The Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board test is set by the General Medical Council. It has two parts. PLAB 1 is a computer-based multiple-choice exam with single-best-answer questions. PLAB 2 is a practical exam, an OSCE with simulated clinical stations, taken in the UK.
The content is based on the GMC's Good Medical Practice and the expectations of a doctor starting the Foundation Programme. Questions often depend on UK guidelines, such as NICE and local practice, which can differ from what you learned elsewhere. Check the GMC site for the current format and routes into registration.
Why it is hard and how to prepare
Candidates usually know medicine well. The trouble is the UK approach: ethics and consent, safeguarding, the order of investigations, and which guideline applies. A single best answer means several options may be reasonable and one is best in UK practice.
Prepare by reading the GMC's content guidance, working through UK-guideline summaries, and doing a lot of single-best-answer questions with explanations. Use active recall for guideline thresholds and first-line treatments, and space them. Review the reasoning behind each wrong answer, not just the correct option.
A plan using Type to Study
Upload your own revision notes, guideline summaries you have written, and PDF chapters from books you own. Build one course per topic area, such as emergency medicine or obstetrics. Type the key management steps in Type mode so the sequence sticks, and let flashcards schedule drug doses and thresholds.
Use the typed-answer quizzes to explain in your own words why an option is best, which builds the reasoning PLAB asks for. For PLAB 2, Type to Study is not the tool. OSCE stations need spoken practice with a partner. Use it for the knowledge behind them.
