A-Level Revision App: Flashcards, Quizzes and Typed Answers from Your Notes
A-Levels are the main post-16 qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and are also taken at international schools and in other countries. They reward detailed content knowledge and exam technique. Type to Study turns your notes and textbooks into revision material, with typed model answers for the long-answer questions.
What A-Levels involve
Students usually study three subjects over two years. Qualifications are awarded by exam boards such as AQA, Edexcel (Pearson), OCR and WJEC, and each board has its own specification and papers. Assessment is mostly by written exams at the end of the course, and some subjects include coursework or a practical endorsement. Grades run from A* to E. Always revise from your own board's specification, since content and paper structure differ between boards and subjects.
Why it is hard and how to revise
The jump from GCSE is large: more content, more depth, and long-answer questions that require precise terminology. Highlighting and rereading notes, the most common revision methods, are among the least effective (Dunlosky et al., 2013). Better methods are retrieval practice (testing yourself), spacing your revision across weeks, and working through past papers with the mark scheme.
Start by turning the specification into a checklist. For each point, test whether you can explain it without notes. Use past papers by topic first, then in full under time. Mark your answers yourself against the examiner's mark scheme, as the wording it rewards is specific.
A plan using Type to Study
Upload your textbook chapters or your class notes as PDFs, or Word files. Build one course per subject. Read each lesson, retype the key points in Type mode, and use the Recall pass to type the highlighted terms. Flashcards from the key terms return after 1, 3, 7, 14 and 30 days, which fits revision across a term.
For essay subjects and long science answers, use the Q&A mode: type the model answer until you can write it from memory, then answer the questions without looking. Use the final exam for a check. Past papers from your exam board remain the best preparation for the real thing, and Type to Study does not replace them. See also /blog/how-to-revise-for-gcse-and-a-level.
