What PTE Academic covers

The Pearson Test of English Academic is run by Pearson. It is taken entirely on computer at a test centre and is scored automatically. It integrates the four skills: Speaking and Writing in one part, Reading, and Listening. Task types include Summarize Written Text, Write Essay, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Fill in the Blanks and Re-order Paragraphs. Scores are reported on a numerical scale, and results are often available within a few days. Check pearsonpte.com for the current format and which institutions and visa authorities accept it.

Why it is hard and how to prepare

Tasks are short and timed, and an automated scorer judges language, content and form. You need a repertoire of strategies for each task type, vocabulary for reading and writing, and the fluency to do it all at speed. Practising with the official PTE practice materials teaches the format.

Strong typing and a clean keyboard technique help in the Writing tasks, where you have a strict word limit and time limit. Train to produce a clear, correct sentence quickly. Because the scorer checks form, such as word count, practise staying inside the limits.

A plan using Type to Study

Upload articles you might meet in academic reading, and use Read mode to see key terms and the structure of each section. Retype passages in Type mode to build speed and phrasing. Use the Recall pass and flashcards to keep academic vocabulary active. Practise summarising a lesson in one sentence from memory as a quick drill for Summarize Written Text.

Use /typing-test for a baseline. Speaking tasks, such as Repeat Sentence, depend on audio and your voice, which Type to Study does not offer. Use Pearson's official practice materials and a coach for those, and for scoring-style feedback.
