Bar Exam Study App: Memorise Black-Letter Law with Spaced Repetition and Typed Recall
The bar exam tests whether you can recall rules of law and apply them to fact patterns. In the United States, that means a huge body of black-letter law held in memory and applied under time. Type to Study turns your outlines and prep material into lessons, flashcards and typed rule statements. Use MBE-style and essay practice for application.
What the bar exam covers
In the United States, each state sets its own bar exam, and many use the Uniform Bar Examination (UBE) prepared by the National Conference of Bar Examiners. The UBE has multiple-choice questions (the Multistate Bar Examination), essays (the Multistate Essay Examination) and performance tests, covering subjects such as contracts, torts, evidence, constitutional law, criminal law and procedure, real property and civil procedure. A new format, called the NextGen bar exam, is being introduced in stages, and jurisdictions differ on when. Other countries have different routes into practice, such as the SQE in England and Wales. Check your jurisdiction's board for the current rules.
Why it is hard and how to prepare
The issue is the volume of rules and the skill of applying them quickly. Passing usually means: learn the rules, test yourself on them daily, and practise hundreds of multiple-choice questions and several timed essays with feedback. Review the explanations on every wrong answer.
Spaced repetition fits the memorisation load: elements of a tort, hearsay exceptions, the rule against perpetuities. Writing the rule statement from memory, as you would in an essay, is stronger practice than recognising it on a card.
A plan using Type to Study
Upload your own outlines, the course notes you made in law school, or a prep book you own. Make one course per subject. In Type mode, retype each rule statement with its elements and exceptions. In the Recall pass, type the key elements from memory. Flashcards then bring the rules back across the weeks before the exam.
Use typed-answer quizzes to practise stating a rule and applying it in a few sentences, which is the heart of an essay answer. Ask the AI tutor to quiz you on a subject. Type to Study does not include licensed MBE questions or graded essays, so use your bar prep provider's question bank and sample answers for that. For the wider study approach, see /for/law-students.
