CSS Exam Preparation App: Compulsory and Optional Subjects, Notes and Answer Practice
The Central Superior Services (CSS) exam is how Pakistan's Federal Public Service Commission selects officers for the federal civil services. It is a written exam with a long syllabus and a strong emphasis on essay and precis skills. Type to Study turns your books and notes into lessons, flashcards and typed answer practice.
What the CSS exam covers
The exam is conducted by the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC). Candidates sit written papers in compulsory subjects, including English (Essay), English (Precis and Composition), General Science and Ability, Current Affairs, Pakistan Affairs and Islamic Studies or Comparative Religions, and then choose optional subjects from groups. Those who pass the written part proceed to a psychological assessment and an interview. The syllabus, subject groups and rules have been revised over the years, so read the current FPSC notification.
Why it is hard and how to prepare
The pass rate in the English papers is a well-known hurdle. The problem is often not knowledge but writing: structure, clarity, grammar and argument. The optional subjects add a lot of reading. A good plan starts early, revises key facts repeatedly, and includes regular timed writing with feedback.
Practise essays and precis from memory with a clear structure. Keep a bank of facts, quotes and examples on Pakistan Affairs and Current Affairs. Revise on a schedule instead of rereading at the end. Past papers show you the pattern of questions.
A plan using Type to Study
Upload your books and notes for each subject, and make one course per paper. Use flashcards for dates, constitutional provisions, treaties and definitions. In Type mode, retype key outlines, and use Q&A to type model answers until you can reproduce the structure from memory.
For the essay, build a course of outlines, arguments and examples for common themes and practise typing an outline from memory, then write full essays by hand under time, since the exam is handwritten. Type to Study does not grade CSS essays and does not hold FPSC papers.
