CPA Exam Study App: Turn Review Notes into Flashcards and Typed Recall
The CPA exam is the licensing exam for certified public accountants in the United States. You pass it section by section over time, and each section has a heavy memory component, plus problem solving. Type to Study builds lessons, flashcards and quizzes from your review course notes. Practise questions and simulations in your review provider's software.
What the CPA exam covers
The Uniform CPA Examination is developed by the AICPA and administered with NASBA and Prometric. It is computer-based at test centres. Under the current model there are three core sections: Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR), Auditing and Attestation (AUD) and Taxation and Regulation (REG), plus one discipline section chosen from Business Analysis and Reporting (BAR), Information Systems and Controls (ISC) or Tax Compliance and Planning (TCP). Each section includes multiple-choice questions and task-based simulations. Eligibility rules, such as education requirements and the time limit to pass sections, are set by each state board, so check yours.
Why it is hard and how to prepare
The difficulty is the amount of detail, and having to retain one section's material for months while you sit others. Candidates who pass tend to study consistently, answer a lot of practice questions, and review every mistake. Reading a review textbook once does not hold. Spaced retrieval of definitions, journal entries, audit procedures and tax rules does.
Learn the logic behind a rule where there is one, since understanding helps recall. For simulations, practise in your review course's exam-style software to get used to the interface and the research tools.
A plan using Type to Study
Upload the notes or PDF chapters from your review course (check the licence for personal use). Make a course per section. Use Type mode to retype journal entries and rules, and the Recall pass for terms. Flashcards will schedule the revision of definitions and standards in the weeks between sections.
After a practice session, build a short course from the topics you missed. The typed-answer quizzes are good for stating audit procedures or tax rules in your own words. Type to Study does not have official AICPA questions or task-based simulations, so keep your review provider's question bank for those. Ask the AI tutor for a memory trick for a hard list.
