To pass a certification exam, download the official exam guide, study the domains in proportion to their weighting, build a schedule that ends with a week of full practice exams, and spend most of your time answering scenario-style questions rather than rereading. Certifications such as AWS, CompTIA, PMP and Google Data Analytics all reward applied understanding, so the aim is to be able to choose the best answer in a realistic situation.
Step 1: start with the official exam guide
Every major certification publishes a guide: AWS exam guides list domains and task statements, CompTIA publishes exam objectives, the PMI publishes the PMP Exam Content Outline, and Google's Data Analytics certificate has a course syllabus. These tell you what is examined and how it is weighted. Check the provider's site for the current version, number of questions and passing rules, since they change.
Step 2: pick one main resource and one practice source
Using five video courses is a common way to feel busy and learn little. Choose one primary resource, such as the provider's own training, a respected course or the official study guide, and one source of practice questions. Add extras only to fill specific gaps.
Step 3: build a schedule backwards from the exam date
| Phase | Share of time | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Learn | About 50% | Work through each domain; make notes and flashcards as you go |
| Practise | About 30% | Domain-by-domain question sets; review every wrong answer |
| Simulate | About 20% | Full timed practice exams; revise weak domains between them |
Most working adults need six to twelve weeks at five to ten hours a week for an associate-level certification, longer for PMP or professional-level exams. Treat that as a guide: your background changes it a lot.
Step 4: learn actively
- After each section, close the material and write what you remember.
- Make flashcards for definitions, acronyms, ports, services and process groups, and review them on a spaced schedule.
- Build things. For AWS, use the free tier to launch an instance, a bucket and an IAM policy. For CompTIA, set up a lab or use virtual machines.
- Explain concepts out loud: why would you choose this service or process over that one?
Step 5: practise scenario questions properly
Certification questions are mostly scenarios: a company has a requirement and you pick the best option. Learn to read for keywords such as "most cost-effective", "least operational overhead", "first step" or "most secure". Then eliminate answers that fail the stated constraint. When you get one wrong, write why the right answer is right and why yours was not. That review is where most of the learning happens.
Be cautious with "exam dump" sites. They often breach the certification provider's rules, can be wrong, and risk disqualification. Use legitimate practice exams.
Step 6: the last week
- Take one or two full-length timed practice exams under realistic conditions.
- Review every question, including the ones you got right by guessing.
- Spend your last days on weak domains and your one-page summary sheet, not on new material.
- Check the exam logistics: ID, online proctoring rules or test centre, and your computer set-up.
- Sleep. A rested brain beats an extra hour of cramming.
Short notes on popular exams
- AWS: heavy on choosing the right service for a requirement. Know the core services deeply and the pillars of the Well-Architected Framework.
- CompTIA (A+, Network+, Security+): broad. Memory work on terms, ports and protocols matters, and performance-based questions test hands-on skill.
- PMP: situational questions on predictive, agile and hybrid approaches. Learn the PMI mindset, not only the definitions.
- Google Data Analytics and similar course-based certificates: the assessments follow the course, so complete the practical tasks and revisit quiz topics you missed.
Where Type to Study can help
If you have a study guide or course PDF, you can upload it (whole books work) and Type to Study builds units, lessons, flashcards and exam-style questions from it, with a final mock exam that is freshly generated each time and tells you which units to revise. There are pages for the AWS certification, CompTIA and PMP exams. It is a practice aid built from your material, not an official question bank, and it does not guarantee a pass. Use official practice tests as well, to calibrate against the real style.
Mindset on the day
Read each question twice. Flag and move on if you are stuck. Do not change answers without a clear reason. If you fail, request the score report: it shows which domains to fix, and a retake with focused study often succeeds.
