GRE Study App: Vocabulary, Maths Review and Essay Practice by Typing
The GRE is a graduate admissions test with verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and an essay task. You type the essays, so typing speed counts. Type to Study helps with the memory side, such as vocabulary and maths concepts, and with the habit of typing structured writing from memory.
What the GRE covers
The GRE General Test is run by ETS. It has Analytical Writing (one essay task, "Analyze an Issue" in the current format), Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning. It is taken on computer at a test centre or at home, and the Verbal and Quant sections adapt by section. Subject Tests exist separately for some fields. The structure and length have been shortened in recent years, so check ets.org/gre for the current version.
The essay is typed in a basic word processor with limited features. Many programmes accept the GRE or other tests such as the GMAT, so confirm what your target programmes require.
What makes it hard and how to prepare
The verbal section leans on vocabulary and on reading dense passages. The quant section tests school-level maths, but under time and with tricks. Learn the word list through context and spaced repetition rather than long one-off lists. Practise quant by topic, then in mixed timed sets, and review every error.
For the essay, learn a simple structure, take a position, support it with reasoned examples, and practise writing under time. Writing by hand first, then typing, is worse practice than typing straight away, because the test is typed.
A plan using Type to Study
Upload your own word list and the notes from your quant review. Flashcards give you the spaced schedule, and Type mode makes you retype definitions and example sentences. For the essay, build a course on essay structure and strong examples from your reading, then use the typing speed test at /typing-test to measure your baseline, and practise typing your own timed essays outside the app.
Type to Study does not grade GRE essays with ETS scoring, and it does not contain official questions. Use ETS's free POWERPREP practice tests for realistic mocks, and treat Type to Study as the memory and typing-habit layer.
